Total catch creeps up

The Silver Wells delivered another bright grilse for Jordon Grant on Friday, this one weighing in at over three pounds and marking his twelfth fish of the season. Once again, a size eight Willie Gunn was the successful fly. But it wasn't long before Jordon went one further, making it number 13 with a five pound fish on a size eight Ally's Shrimp from the Palace Pool on Saturday. With just six fish being caught this week, one each day, the total catch from Inverness Angling Club’s water so far this season has risen to 156, still 21 short of last year.

Ninth trout league

October arrives on Sunday to herald the start of Inverness Angling Club’s ninth annual winter trout league at Achagour Fishery, where anglers are guaranteed a warm welcome from the Mackintosh family. The entry of 25, which includes four of the club’s junior members, will fish one day of their choosing each month from October to April, then all entrants get together to fish the final on Saturday, May 12. The league produces good trout fishing and close season camaraderie among members.

Ally gets a result

Persevere and the results will come. That has certainly come true for long-serving IAC member Ally Scott, who has committed a fair amount of time to the river over the last several weeks. Today, fishing the fly, Ally caught a fresh five pound cock grilse on his favourite Little Isle Pool.

Eleven for Jordon

That young man with the big cast was at it again today, landing his eleventh salmon of the season. Down on his favoured Silver Wells Pool, where he has had so much success this season, Jordon Grant landed and released a five pound grilse on a size eight gold Willie Gunn. Quite a few anglers were out on the water but no other catches were reported.

Visitor’s success

Catches are pretty sparse on the Ness at the moment but visitor James Buchanan of Kirktilloch, an associate member of IAC, showed that fish are there to be caught. Fishing a Toby, James landed and released a 10 pound salmon in the Silver Wells Pool.

Derek does it again

Derek Proctor, who caught the first fish of the season on Inverness Angling Club’s water on March 1, was in action again today. Fishing a 2.5 inch minnow in the Weir Pool, he landed a four pound grilse - still silver but with no sea lice and a good bit smaller than his 16 pound springer!

Boxes out for catch returns

It’s that time of year again! IAC members are advised that, for their convenience, boxes for the annual return of catches have now been placed in Graham’s tackle shop and in the Little Isle and Mill Stream huts. Don’t forget to complete your card and pop it into one of the boxes. Failure to do so could prove costly when you renew your membership.

Activity increases

Not exactly an explosion of activity but club anglers on the Ness got a bit more action today. Ian Jennings turned to the spinner for a change and landed a four pound grilse from the MacIntyre Pool. Up on the Red Braes, Neil Fraser landed and released a hen fish of four pounds while Jordon Grant made double figures for the season with a five pounder. Back on the Silver Wells, Davie Dyce did well with a coloured fish of four pounds and a sea-liced specimen of 10 pounds.
